The state of modern warehousing has pivoted from a cost centre to a platform for resilience and growth, moving from focusing on the most space to the smartest, most resilient space.

Unipart has published a new report highlighting that the need to reshape warehousing in this way is a necessity.

Murray Goodrick, Sales Director for Logistics & Transport UK at Unipart, said: “Reshaping warehousing is fundamental for growth and resilience, it is no longer a cost centre but a platform for future growth, resilience and differentiation in the UK and beyond.

“Warehousing should be reshaped to focus on resilience over efficiency as the industry is shifting from who has the most space, to who has the smartest, most resilient space.”

The Unipart report identifies several key forces reshaping the warehousing industry: resilience over pure efficiency is now paramount, driven by geopolitical instability and hyper-fulfilment, which necessitates diversified, multi-node supply chains and strategic stock levels.

Simultaneously, digital transformation is moving beyond basic automation toward intelligent, interconnected ecosystems using AI, IoT, and advanced robotics (AMRs), requiring workers to be upskilled for human-robot collaboration. Furthermore, sustainability is a core operational and regulatory imperative, pushing for net-zero warehouses, green construction, and a central role in the circular economy.

Finally, facing land scarcity, the industry is focusing on urban integration and the intelligent optimisation of cubic space through verticality and the use of urban logistics solutions like micro-fulfilment centres.
