Henry Pilley joined the Unipart Graduate Programme in September 2024 as an Electronics Engineer after studying Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Liverpool. The Unipart Graduate Programme has helped Henry identify the area of expertise he’d like to pursue in his career, engineering management.

In this article, Henry shares his experience in the Unipart Graduate Programme as he reflects on his first year.

Can you describe your current role and key responsibilities?
“I am currently working in the Design and Development team in Crewe. My current responsibilities involve the development of test equipment hardware for new rail products, obsolescence management and reviewing technical documents, drawings and reports.”

How would you describe the structure of the programme?
“The most valuable part of the programme has been the ability to experience work in different areas of the Unipart business, enabling me to see my strengths and weaknesses and even the roles, tasks and responsibilities which I do and don’t enjoy.”

How has this programme shaped your career ambitions?
“While the graduate scheme has helped me build a strong foundation of technical skills, it has also given me valuable insight into engineering management, which I’m keen to pursue further. It’s been eye-opening to see how other areas, such as good business development and project management play a role in shaping the bigger picture.”

How has the training and development provided supported your growth?
“In my first year at Unipart, I have attended training days and workshops with my graduate cohort, gaining professional development through talks, site tours, and engagement with senior leadership. On placement, I have developed both professional competencies and technical skills, with progress reviewed in one-to-ones with my manager and periodic check-ins with the Early Careers team.”

How would you describe the culture of the company and your team?
“The culture varies from team to team, and I try to carry the aspects I value into my next placement. Even though each placement lasts only six months, I have always felt welcomed as a full member of the team. The overall culture is positive, with everyone working together to get the job done.”
