The Challenge

A major luxury automotive brand’s operations in China, which serves over 138 dealerships across the country, required a logistics partner that could meet the high standards of a luxury automotive brand.

They were looking for a supplier who could satisfy their expectations regarding digital capabilities and operational efficiency for their marketing warehouse.

The core challenge for the project was threefold:

  • Successfully transfer over 5,000 SKUs from the existing supplier to the new Unipart-operated facility while ensuring zero impact on dealer operations.
  • Drastically improve inventory control, as the initial inventory discrepancy reached 6.86% before transfer to Unipart.
  • Enhance the overall digital and intelligent level of warehouse operations to significantly improve efficiency.

The Solution

Unipart was awarded the competitive tender to operate the automotive brand’s warehouse, including transportation and export business.

To meet the customer’s objectives, Unipart created an expert project team composed of operations, digital, and safety specialists from Unipart China.

Key elements of the solution included:

  • An in-house, custom-built WMS system built by Unipart’s digital team in 50 days was implemented to enable accurate storage location management, streamline inbound and outbound processes, and control transportation management.
  • The Unipart team completed the entire transfer of goods within just one week. Racking, network, equipment, and other warehouse facilities were installed in half a month to ensure readiness.
  • Optimal storage shelf design and layout, contributing to an immediate reduction in required warehouse space.
  • Post-delivery, standardised work and continuous operational improvements, including the deployment of real-time order and transportation status display, intelligent inbound/outbound processes, and customized reports.

The Impact

By implementing a dedicated digital WMS and applying lean methodology, Unipart significantly improved operational efficiency, reduced operating costs, and delivered superior inventory accuracy for the customer.

The digital operational management resulted in a significant improvement to both operational efficiency and intelligent level.

This successful project delivery directly resulted in:

  • Inventory discrepancy was reduced from 6.86% at the start of the project to 1.66% by the time of project delivery – a 75.6% reduction.
  • The overall warehouse usage area was reduced by 20% from the original footprint.
  • Materials were stored in a rational and orderly manner, improving operational efficiency within the warehouse.
