The Challenge
A large logistics campus packing and distributing more than 800,000 automotive components each month wanted to reduce energy consumption and gain greater control across its operations.
The campus extended across nine buildings with different operating patterns, including units occupied by a third parties. .
Energy performance was managed through manually recorded spreadsheet data, monthly invoices and billing statements. This provided a high-level, retrospective view of consumption but gave the facilities team little insight into:
- where and when energy was being used
- unusual changes in consumption
- energy use outside operating hours
- whether equipment and controls were operating as expected, or
- the financial impact of avoidable energy waste.
The site needed to move beyond retrospective monitoring and gain the real-time intelligence required to identify issues, understand their causes and take targeted action.
The Solution
EI. Energy Control System was deployed across all nine buildings, giving the facilities team real-time visibility of energy consumption across the logistics campus.
Automated alerts and proactive analysis identified several sources of abnormal and avoidable consumption:
- A unit occupied by a third party was consuming significantly more energy than expected
- Heating and lighting were being left on for prolonged periods when the building was unoccupied
- Unusual lighting consumption led to an immediate investigation, which identified several faulty LED sensors.
The insight allowed the team to move from monitoring overall consumption to taking targeted action across individual buildings, operating periods and systems.
Lighting controls were reprogrammed to switch off automatically outside operating hours, faulty sensors were replaced and more robust end-of-day shutdown procedures were introduced.
