LNER uncovers profit eroding energy waste using EI. energy control system

The Challenge

As part of its commitment to creating a more sustainable railway, London North Eastern Railway (LNER) needed to gain control of energy consumption at its depots.

At a pivotal UK facility, management teams were reliant on monthly billing data to review energy spend – making it impossible to identify or act on inefficiencies in real time.

This lack of visibility meant that profit impacting energy risks, inefficiencies and emissions from lighting, HVAC, and server room operations were going undetected, silently driving up costs.

The Solution

Unipart partnered with LNER to implement EI. Energy Control System, providing real-time control and actionable insights to the site operations teams.

Smart sensors were installed across HVAC, lighting, and server room assets, giving EI. the ability to automatically analyse trends, detect anomalies, and guide savings. Installation of non-invasive sensors across HVAC, lighting, employee facilities and server rooms was completed rapidly with no disruption to depot operations.

The system’s AI-powered analytics immediately turned energy data into actionable insights and immediate business value for the site team. EI. identified several areas of unnecessary energy draw, including 24/7 server room cooling, lighting running outside of operational hours and anomalies in energy use in communal areas.

Acting on AI-driven prompts and guided by their dedicated Unipart Energy Guru who helped the LNER team understand their data and prioritise actions, the LNER team implemented small, targeted changes to their site energy control strategies.

The Impact

The solution empowered the LNER depot team to move from retrospective reporting to proactive, instant energy control.

With rapid deployment, no disruption to operations, and live 30-second data streaming, depot managers quickly gained control of site-wide energy consumption and impacts. By making previously invisible energy waste and consumption anomalies visible and actionable, LNER reduced its annual energy consumption, operating costs and associated carbon footprint.

Using EI. aligns with LNER’s commitment to sustainable travel and creating a better journey by using industry-leading initiatives to minimise waste, increase circular systems and make every aspect of their business as efficient as possible.

  • Reduced annual energy use by over 10,400 kWh
  • Delivered annual cost savings of over £1,300
  • ROI in under 6 months
  • Markable Scope 2 carbon reduction
