EI. reduces technology SME’s energy usage by 85%

For many office-based businesses like Instrumentel, a UK-based technology SME, energy consumption is often seen as a fixed, unavoidable cost. With no large machinery or high-consumption industrial assets, the assumption was that little could be done to reduce an energy bill that accounted for over 13% of the company’s total establishment costs.

The leadership team at Instrumentel challenged this assumption. They wanted to gain better visibility of their building’s energy efficiency, seeking a way to proactively reduce both consumption and costs.

The Challenge

The primary challenge was a lack of visibility. Without live data, the business was blind to the specific sources of its energy spend, making it impossible to identify or act upon potential inefficiencies.

  • No actionable data: Without a system to monitor consumption in real-time, the team had no way to know where energy was being used most, what “normal” looked like, or how to measure the impact of any changes.
  • Rising operational costs: With energy bills making up a significant portion of operational costs, doing nothing meant accepting a growing and unnecessary risk to profitability.

To overcome these challenges, Instrumentel needed a simple, effective solution to provide the data required to turn assumptions into facts and unlock hidden savings.

The Solution

Instrumentel partnered with Unipart to deploy EI. Energy Control System, an energy monitoring solution designed specifically for businesses seeking clear, actionable intelligence.

As part of the EI. deployment, non-invasive sensors were installed on the main electricity and gas feeds to monitor, analyse, and visualise the building’s energy consumption in real-time.

Within a short period, the data pinpointed a major source of previously hidden waste: outside security lights were being left on for unnecessarily long periods. Armed with this evidence, Instrumentel was able to make a simple, targeted change by adding motion sensors to the external lights so they were only active when needed.

The Impact

The deployment of EI. proved that even in an office environment, significant savings are achievable through data-driven insight. The impact was both immediate and substantial.

85% reduction in lighting energy: The simple change to the security lights resulted in an 85% reduction in their annual energy consumption.

22% reduction in overall energy costs: The visibility and targeted actions delivered by Eco Insight led to a 22% reduction in the site’s total annual energy costs, directly improving the company’s bottom line.
