Bangor to Colwyn Bay rail upgrade

The Challenge
Transport for Wales identified the requirement to bring the North Wales Main Line up to the same standard as the other “main lines” across the UK rail network.
This required a major upgrade in terms of line speed, capacity and electrification and was essential to enable delivery of the Welsh Government’s journey time, economic ambitions and to integrate with the UK Government’s Northern Powerhouse.
The Solution
Unipart manufactured and supplied Functional Supply Points (FSPs) – the equipment that provides the electrical supply for signalling power distribution throughout the rail infrastructure.
The FSPs were designed to enhance operational efficiency, improve installation time (minimising network downtime), and provide a fully scalable solution for similar future projects. The team developed a hybrid design which met the customer’s needs to successfully deliver the power requirements for the new signalling system, whilst providing a fully scalable solution which enables enhancements for future projects. Typically, as with any project of this scale, variations occurred and the team incorporated a number of design changes which were delivered without impacting the overall programme.

operational efficiencies
The Impact
The installation of Unipart FSPs increased operational efficiencies through design innovations, resulting in reduced installation time and a future-proofed product with minimal ongoing maintenance needs.
The FSPs’ design provided Network Rail with a modular and scalable solution for implementation on future projects.
